Unique Jewellery Finds - Silver and Sisal jewellery

Today I want to share another unique jewellery material that I came across during the The World Craft Council    Kaivalam  an International Craft Summit that was hosted in Chennai a few months back . It is jewellery made from sisal fiber .

                Sisal fibers ,  obtained from the  hardy Agave plant , is extracted by a retting process similar to that of linen . Mostly found in Brazil , Mexico, China , and Africa , this natural fiber is used to make ropes , twines , carpets , etc . Also used for making lovely coiled baskets ,........................................................... and now as delicate jewellery , the sisal fiber has found a new use. 

I absolutely love the delicate bracelet and earrings that I got from their stall at the crafts bazaar , and here are the pictures of the same

 

  Tintsaba, a craft initiative by the women of Swaziland , produces these beautiful coiled bracelets and other pieces of jewellery by coiling natural dyed sisal fiber along with silver to create unique jewellery .

My latest WIP- Earrings to match my ostrich bead necklace.

Remember my earlier post on Unique Jewelry finds , Ostrich eggshell beads  , from the exhibition hosted by  Kaivalam ? Well as mentioned earlier , I had a necklace and bracelet , but no earrings to match.

So I decided to make a pair of earrings to match and complete the set.

Taking a few beads apart from the peyote stitch bracelet ,I added the faux coral cabs , just as I had added in the necklace , using bead embroidery .



 A jiffy project , it took just  a couple of hours to finish .

Unique Jewellery Finds ----- Ostrich eggshell beads !

The World Craft Council  hosted   Kaivalam  an International Craft Summit in Chennai , India . Among the various events taking place there were wonderful exhibits by International crafts persons from all around the world. Though I missed the earlier events held during September end as I was away , I couldnt wait to see the crafts bazaar. Wow what an eyecandy that  was !

    Among the bazaar  was the stall from Namibia ,       ( Do lookup their website at  www.omba.org.na )
which had these beaded necklaces and bracelets. At first the jewellery appeared simple to me , but as I got into a conversation with the stall incharge , I was surprised to find that it was made from ostrich egg shells.  Wonder of Wonders .....! I had heard of beads made from lots of different natural materials apart from glass or metal but this was the first time I saw ostrich eggshell being made into beads , and I was floored. To my amazement , the oldest known beads have been made from this material , and are still being made even today !

Carrying my prized posession  home ,  I promptly looked up the net , ( my faithful informer ) and was really intrigued by the process of making these beads . It gives a detailed process that goes into making these beads.
